Molecular toxicology research on the susceptible population exposed to environmental pollutants

1) Occupational health safety evaluation in nanomaterial production place

Nanomaterials are now mass-manufactured worldwide. There is an increasing concern on the occupational health and safety of nanoparticles in the workplaces. We mainly focus on the airborne nanoparticles and agglomerates (nanoparticle aerosols) in air, because airborne exposures are very dangerous to human health and difficult to control. This research can provide references for the development of safety evaluation threshold of the aerosol exposure and the following establishment of occupational protection standards .

2) Health effect studies on the long-term mercury-exposed residents in the Wanshan mercury mining area

Due to a long history of extensive mercury mining and smelting activities, local residents in Wanshan, China, are suffering from elevated mercury exposure. We mainly focus on the effects of occupational workers and susceptible population after long-term exposure to mercury. From the experiment results, the level of 8-OHdG in urine can be used as the gene damage biomarker and it is an important indicator to evaluate the injury of human mercury exposure when especially being at the early stage.

Extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis, which has the advantages of in situ and non-invasively analysis to gain the valence state and structural information of selenium and mercury in biological samples, had been used in our studies. The isotope dilution method (78Se) confirms that different Se-contained blood proteins have variant abilities in binding and transporting mercury.
